On Making Money Online & Australian Reader’s Digest

Aack. How could I have missed blogging about my “small brush with fame” on the the Diamond Anniversary Special of Australian Reader’s Digest (July 2006 issue)? Ha.

Reader's Digest - July 2006 FeatureAnyway, the article on ARD is titled “Your hobby + a computer = extra money”. And, it was written by Louise Waterson. She featured other Australians who are making money off the web. My bit is on making money online through blogging.

Other web-based businesses that were mentioned include:

  • eBay Auctions - Featured Amanda and Shane Benson (eBay ID: Art_Invest), on auctioning artworks.
  • Product Sales - Featured Emma Gerring and her business, The Wool Shack, as well as Katie Halson and her online pet supplies business, OzPetShop. Glenda Startup of The Denier Store was also featured.
  • Advertising and Affiliates - It is interesting to note that apart from sales of pet products, Katie of OzPetShop also makes money off her site through advertising. And, yes, blogging also makes money off advertisements and affiliates (among others).

    • Reader's Digest - July 2006 CoverOther useful tips from the article include:

    1) Make your sites/pages visual. Include pictures and descriptions. Let customers know exactly what they’re getting.

    2) Corner a particular audience. Find a niche.

    3) Even if you’re doing something you love, make sure that you practice due business diligence.

    4) Know how to manage your time.

    5) Make your website/weblog look professional. It’s important to both customers and advertisers.

    6) Start small - and grow it from there.

    7) Learn all you can about running online businesses - from setting up websites to running payment systems, as well as SEO and other promotional strategies.

    8) Build partnerships with other site owners and online businesses.
