Types of Web Presence
As a rule of thumb, if you want to make money online, you need to have some kind of web presence. Yes, I know it sounds way too simple. But, I have encountered people who say things like, “I wish I can make money online like you…” Then, when I ask them about their web presence, they’d say that other than using email and surfing the web, there’s nothing else.
Well, you can probably still make money online just using email and surfing the web. Providing content to other websites, etc., ‘get paid to read your email/surf’ schemes, get paid to answer surveys, and cash domain parking are four things that come to mind. But, even with these money-making ventures, I imagine having a full web presence will still work best.
Anyway, to try and explain the different types of web presence, I decided to categorise them in to four types:
1) Blogs - Or, weblogs. Over the last couple of years or so, this has increasingly become the most popular form of web presence. If you’re not familiar with this, here’s a short definition of a weblog - What is a blog? JMMO is a blog.
2) Static Websites - These sites are basically pages that are just created like online brochures. There’s no interactity, apart from perhaps an order page (if it’s selling a product), an email subscription form, or something similar. They’re created like information pages and are not meant to be updated on a regular basis. Usually, there’s plenty of text, interspersed with some images. Sometimes, there’s a video or an audio clip. A couple of examples: this* and this*.
3) Dynamic Websites - These sites have a similar look and feel to a static website. But, it gets updated (new articles are added, product catalogues are updated, etc) on schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, etc) or on a case-by-case basis. Online magazines (or ezines), forums, online shopping sites, etc. belong to this category. One of my sites, eMothersOnline, is an example.
4) Third Party Services - Some people may not have a blog or website, but they still have a web presence using a third party service. I include eBay auctions or stores, CafePress stores, Amazon Stores, etc.
Of course, some people have a combination (Static website and Blog, Third Party Service and Dynamic Site, etc) - or even all of the aforementioned types of web presence. Depending on what you want to do to make money online, it’s really all up to you about choosing the right avenue for you.

Good, quick-n-dirty summary of the different ways to make money online. Anybody who’s interested can get started, even if they don’t have their own website. And once they’ve made a bit of cash selling stuff on eBay or whatever, they can spend a few bucks (less than $20) to start their own website, and continue their online earning journey from there.
