Further to my post of one year ago, it is getting ever harder to succeed in the microstock industry. Acceptance standards for new contributors to the websites seem to be getting tighter, and it is harder to make worthwhile sales then previously. This is partly due to the fact that most of the obvious, saleable shots have already been done, to a very high standard, with many of the larger websites now having image collections containing literally millions of photos.
More than ever before, success in this market is based on uploading a large number, of technically and creatively excellent images, which have been specifically shot for this purpose. Your existing holday photos will not make much headway here, even if (and it’s a big if) they are even accepted.

I’d say beware with comments that people have left here saying that sites are so great. If you check the link they have given they have a reference in the end – that will make them money if you sign up and use the site after clicking on the site (referral programs). Just saying that their opinion is a bit objective that’s all.

Making worthwhile money via microstock is not very easy.
The sites are becoming increasingly competitive, and the process of being accepted as a contributor is becoming harder. In general, decent quality equipment (a DSLR as a minimum, most compact cameras will not be good enough for many of the better sites.
Totally forget about cameraphones!). The photos will need to be taken with a good degree of skill, in good lighting and will then generally need to be processed in photoshop or a similar image editing program to make them look as good (and saleable) as possible. Working out what are likely to be useful concepts with good sales potential is also quite tough at times – most of the obvious themes have already been covered, very extensively, with excellent photos shot by accomplished pros.
With my portfolio of over 300 photos on istock, I consistently make several hundred dollars each month. However, I was already a professional photographer before signing up with istock and use qood quality professional equipment, including studio lighting which is needed for many shots.
Many contributors have portfolios many times larger than this but will make far less money. It is not an easy market to do well in – many amateur contributors use it to help subsidise their hobby, rather than making much money from it. However, there are some notable exceptions, and it is possible for photographers with good skills – or the ability to learn them quickly – to make worthwhile income.
