Open Mic Mondays: On Regular Events

The first Open Mic here at JMMO was a bit quiet. But, one of the things I learned in life is not to give up easily even when things don’t turn out the way you want them to immediately. Sometimes, you just have to keep plugging along and keep on finding ways to make something work.
So, I will do just that.
Anyway, even if that Open Mic did just have a single comment at the time of this writing, it was nevertheless a good comment from Karlo (of Pinoy Bloggero). There, he wrote (edited slightly):
A lot of people nowadays try to engage into blogging just to make money online. They think that just by erecting a blog, the money would just keep on coming in. This may be because of the increasing number of blogs that are earning money from it. They think it is very easy, but in fact, it takes more than just that to make an income.
Just what I always say, blogs are not a get rich quick scheme. Making money from it would take considerable amount of time and effort just like any other money making opportunities.
My quick thought on this topic: I don’t have the stats on how many people start blogs just to make money. But, one thing I do know is that simply starting a blog won’t make anyone rich. And, if they don’t really enjoy blogging for the love of it, then having a blog will not make them happy either.
Anyway, another thing that Karlo wrote in the comment is that it’s probably best to have a specific topic whenever I run an Open Mic event. And, I absolutely agree. So, from hereon, there will always be a theme/topic in every Open Mic.
With this thought in mind, I decided to try and to make this a regular event. And, as you can see, I chose Mondays as the regular day. So, if I ever do post an Open Mic, it will be on a Monday. And, hopefully, I’ll be able to do a recap/summary/comment by the end of the week (or shortly after!). Maybe highlight one or two of the best posts/comments. I’m not sure yet whether it’s a good idea to run this on a weekly basis or not, so I’ll experiment a bit on the timing for now. Your thoughts/feedback on this will be welcome!
So yes, the topic of this week’s Mic Monday is on running regular events. Some guideline questions:
1) Do you run regular events on your blog/site? If yes, what are they and how often do you run them? If not, why not?
2) If you run regular events on your blog/site, what benefits have you found? Do you wish to keep doing these events?
3) Have you participated in regular events in other blogs/sites? If yes, which ones and what do you think of them?
Of course, you don’t need to answer all of these questions. They’re just things to spark some ideas. And, I look forward to reading them…

I haven´t gotten around to starting any regular event on my blog, I just don´t have enough traffic yet. Maybe next month. :)
I have done several Thursday Thirteens, but I am really careful about what memes I join since I don´t want to detract from the business theme of my blog. With my newest addition to the blog network, Expat Mom, I plan to do more regular events because it is a personal blog and is quite appropriate for things like Wordless Wednesdays and the like which are circulating the blogosphere.

I don’t have regular events at my blog, though I’ve thought about having some sort of give away.
I’m not entirely sure why, I think I have it in my head that people come to read what I’ve written, rather than to attend an “event”.
I have no real support for that theory, though.
I tend not to participate in events, usually because of poor planning on my part for such things as blog carnivals.
I need to get better at them, as they can be a good traffic source.

Genesis: Sometimes, one way to actually drive traffic to your site is by holding (or participating in) events. Let me know if you give it a try!
Busy Mom: Your writing and storytelling skills are fantastic. I’m sure that’s definitely what your readers come for. But, maybe just like any friendship, while they like you for YOU… they might also appreciate attending your ‘parties’. Just a thought! :-)

I think you’re right, Shai, I probably need to make a plan. This crazy day job gets in the way of my blogging. Must do something about that.
