Userplane: Make Money Online with Community
I just noticed one of our new sponsors here at JMMO - Userplane (an AOL company). Since it’s all about web community, I had to check it out and find out what it’s all about. It’s a very interesting concept and I got interested in testing it. So, I signed up for an account. I then found out that they’re running a programme called Userplane Money. Apparently, if you run a community and people use your community’s chat facilities, you can then make money.
Just remember that after you sign up with a Userplane account, you need to set up your community. There’s a default community that you can immediately edit. You can also add more communities if you wish. However, in order to make money, you need to further sign up for Userplane Money programme. It’s not automatic. You need to set it up with your payment details, etc.
Additional things to note:
1) Only US-based folks are eligible to sign up for the Userplane Money programme. However, anyone can set up a community.
2) Paypal is the mode of payment and there’s a threshold of US$25 before you can get paid.
3) Your account must be active for more than 30 days before you can start making money.
4) You’ll need a US Tax ID Number or Social Security Number to be eligible for Userplane Money. Again, you don’t need this if you’re not thinking of using the programme.
Since I’m Australia-based, I’m ineligible to test whether the programme really works when it comes to making money. However, since I’m all for community, I’d like to see how people can monetise community features. It’s a good start, but they really ought to find a way to get rid of the US-only restrictions. It’s so old web school. :-p
If you’re US-based and you give it a go, let me know. It’ll be interesting to find out your experience with it.
