As promised, here’s the result of last month’s poll: Have you ever made any kind of money online?
The good news is that 7% of the voters said that they make a living on the web. And, a further 7% said that they make a good part-time income. This shows that it IS possible to make money online. 14% of the voters said so.
And, an additional 33% said that they at least made “some small change” from their online endeavours.
But, the winning sentiment is: No, never.
 Â
Yes – out of the 396 people who voted in this poll, 53% claimed that they’ve never made any money online at all.
I know that this shouldn’t really be a big surprise. I do believe that most people don’t see the web as a money-making opportunity. At least, most of the people I know “in real life” don’t see it as such.
But, since this is a “make money online” blog – I wonder how folks found this site and ended up voting on the poll. Are these people who never made any money online interested in starting an online business project? Or, did they just happen to stop by somehow? If they do want to make money online, what’s stopping them? What will help them see money coming in from their online ventures?
Hmmm…
In any case, this just reiterates to me that the main audience of this blog are newcomers to the world of money making online. So, I’ll keep that in mind and hope that I will be able to serve their needs through JMMO.

I have just started looking at the web as a place to do business. Affiliate marketing, blogging, etc. are all new to me.
It might be more informative to add the question “Are you working toward making money online?”. Since your website is geared toward teaching the valuable skills needed to make money using web technologies, you may have many newbies like me reading and absorbing everything we can.
Quint: Great idea! Will probably update my blog’s description now. Thanks! And, good luck! Please feel free to share your money making experiences with us any time.
I loved reading the answer to this poll. It seems many people think of making money online as some program you can buy into. Instead, it’s about finding something you are good at and that you can do well, and then translating into a skill you can do over the Internet. Or boosting your business with successful online marketing. I blogged this over at my work from home blog, BTW: http://www.workshak.com/2007/09/are-you-making-.html
I so agree with Miranda! I think that it has to start with doing something that one loves and/or is passionate about. The problem starts (IMHO) when money is the ONLY concern when one starts a blog because the blog could end up looking like some sort of “spam” blog or just a blog that looks like its not written by a person. And it kind of loses the whole purpose of blogging in the first place. But a lot of people start blogs and then add adsense to them and then lament when they don’t make a lot of adsense money. Since I am an adsense consultant I’m a little bit biased but I still firmly believe that one can continue to be “true” to their blog’s contents AND be able to make adsense money from it too. I guess I am my own proof of that!
I was just watching a news segment about how some people have been able to make money with their blogs – one Perez Hilton who has a celebrity gossip blog is going to get his own TV show! Some bloggers have gotten book deals….another blogger’s blog that I was reading got one of his online articles published in a major business magazine.
I just started, and I have already made a few bucks, but I plan on increasing that soon. I started with a program that is working well for me, if you want to check it out head to http://free-websites-package.com/ for reviews on the top programs. Also, comment on my blog if you get the chance.
