I have been registered at Guru.com for several months now (free account). The one and only job I was able to get was a very labor intensive transcription job (over 6 hours) that involved a lot of audio clean-up and formatting. I was paid $30.00 for the entire job.

My experience on Guru for transcription jobs is that employers are trying to get the hardest work done that they can (most of it is seems to small companies with overflow work) for as cheap as they can possibly can.

I logged on today and noticed that one employer wants an hour of audio transcribed (5 hours of actual typing time involved), and will only pay $15.00 for the entire job. That translates to about $3.00 per hour.

Not a website I would recommend to anyone.

I have used Guru on a free basis, never won a job. I have been a paid customer of ifreelance for 2 years and no longer have a need or desire for most jobs on there. I have previously won several, but find that it's now mostly SEO and web writing. Some decent pay, but the topics are getting more and more off the beaten path. Anyway, I stay with ifreelance for the awesome online portfolio service it offers. Low maintenance, user friendly, it offers a client review section and page view tracking statistics so I know how many people are checking it out. It's only $78 a year and I use it in all my e-mail signatures. Check my online portfolio out by clicking on my name.

I've used Guru but have not been as successful with a free account. I do use Elance regularly and have been able to bid on and win jobs weekly. Guru is a good source of work but you'll have to subscribe and bid often.

Misti,

"I’ve used Guru, with a free account, and did recently get paid for the job I won there. It took me awhile to win a bid, though."

Good for you!

I hate those freelance sites with fees!

There's also iFreelance.com, which has gotten me some work, but I ultimately wasn't earning me enough to warrant the monthly fee.
